Real Life Marriage is Effortless for Gary Unmarried Star Jay Mohr
August 26, 2008

Comedian Jay Mohr has carved out a unique career for himself in Hollywood, having successfully walked the line between stand-up comedy, feature films, and series television. After leaving Saturday Night Live back in 1994, Mohr went on to land roles in such films as Jerry Maguire, Suicide Kings and Go (most recently Street Kings with Keanu Reeves) before starring as morally challenged Hollywood agent Peter Dragon in the short lived-but-highly-memorable series Action. Later, Mohr served as executive producer and host of the stand-up reality series Last Comic Standing and now the jack-of-all-comedic trades is returning to the small screen in the role of Gary Brooks in the CBS series Gary Unmarried, which debuts September 24 on CBS, about a recently single painting contractor with two kids, and his controlling ex-wife, Allison (played by Paula Marshall), as they adjust to life after divorce while trying to find new relationships.

Away from the acting world, like most men, married life is often a meandering journey filled with ups, downs, and a variety of unexpected life lessons. After a six year marriage to former model Nicole Chamberlain that ended in divorce, wedded bliss didn't come easy for Jay Mohr. During a recent CBS conference call with Mohr and Gary Unmarried producers, Ed Yeager and Ric Swartzlander, Mohr revealed to The Deadbolt that he's grown over the years to see marriage in a new light. As compared to what type of guy he was during his days on SNL, and how he eventually settled into life as a married man during his first trip to the altar, married life is now "effortless," as Mohr explained. Instead, it was more about how his second marriage has become effortless with wife and former Las Vegas actress Nikki Cox. Nowadays, in his second marriage, life is a lot easier, as Mohr told us how he and Cox don't fight at all and have only been apart 48 hours in the past three years, unlike his first marriage, which was, as Mohr revealed, "... a lot of dog walking, day trips, going to the beach. Now it's effortless."

In recent weeks, Gary Unmarried bolstered its acting roster with the addition of former '80s St. Elsewhere doctor, Ed Begley Jr., who will step into the shoes of Gary's divorce therapist. When asked about how Begley Jr.'s sense of humor will fit into the show, Mohr explained that Ed Begley Jr. is "... made of mulch," meaning the environmentally friendly Begley brings his own unique brand and blend of comedy to the series. "Every Friday, he sits down and does the New York Times crossword puzzle in five minutes, which pisses me off," Mohr sarcastically told us. As producer Ed Yeager, chimed in, "Everything he says is funny." Yeager elaborated how casting Begley was more born out of the fact that Ed Begley Jr. plays Ed Begley Jr. so well, which is exactly what they wanted for a supporting sense of humor on Gary Unmarried.

From his first marriage, Mohr has matured into fatherhood as a role model for his son Jackson. As far as what kids are into these days that could have possibly helped to prepare him for Gary Unmarried, Mohr revealed, "I know what my kid is into - Webkinz. Once you get one, you have to get more Webkinz to go along with that one, and more... it just keeps expanding. Whenever we go shopping, it's all about conquest. Every time he sees one, [it's like] 'Daddy. Poland. I want it!' So I know kids are into Webkinz and kids are into Risk."

Gary Unmarried premieres September 24 on CBS.
