TheDeadbolt Artist of the Month: Shwayze - "Let It Beat" by Reg Seeton
The
story of Shwayze is one that many aspiring pop,
hip-hop artists can take inspiration from since
Shwayze namesake, Aaron Smith, was actually working
at a Starbucks in Malibu before crossing paths
with Shwayze partner and former Whitestarr front
man, Cisco Adler, son of legendary producer Lou
Adler. But the early magic that led to Shwayze
success was aided by another musical legend in
Alex Orbison, son of the late great Roy Orbison,
who was also a member of Whitestarr with Adler
when Shwayze wowed both Cisco and Orbison with
his onstage freestyle talents. Recognizing the
musical potential in Shwayze, Cisco Adler jumped
at the chance to collaborate with Smith and soon
began to write, produce and perform as a new musical
duo under the name Shwayze, which then led to
a record deal with Suretone Records in 2007.
Capturing musical party lightning in a bottle, Shwayze and Cisco were poised to break out in 2008. Ahead of their self-titled Shwayze debut, Shwayze and Cisco Adler approached MTV for a reality series about their ascent to musical greatness as a way to promote their new collaboration and upcoming debut, co-written and produced by Cisco Adler. In July of 2008, Buzzin' with Shwayze and Cisco Adler premiered on MTV under the name of the first single from the forthcoming Shwayze record.
In August 2008, Shwayze and Adler released "Shwayze", which quickly hit the Billboard charts with two singles - "Buzzin'" reaching #46 on the Billboard Hot 100 and "Corona and Lime" cracking the Top 25 at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on iTunes. Wasting no time in building their fans base, Shwayze and Cisco following up in November 2008 with more music on the Shwayze mix tape, "Rich Girls", which produced a fan favorite in "Gotta Go".
After
finding success in 2008 and landing on the party,
club scene and having fun with an array of young
celebrities and California hotties while also
forming friendships with such artists as LMFAO,
Shwayze and Cisco Adler hit the studio in 2009
to give fans the stand alone single and video,
"Rock 'n Roll" as they prepared for the second
full-length Shwayze release, "Let It Beat",
which went wide to Shwayze fans on November
3.
Although the self-titled 2008 Shwayze debut was a creative and quick collaboration between Shwayze and Adler to kick-start their dynamic duo career together, "Let It beat" saw the Malibu party pair take their professional game to new heights when former Cars front man and veteran producer, Ric Ocasek, climbed onboard to produce while Snoop Dogg and Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band pianist, Roy Bittan, also stepped up to appear on "Let It Beat". The success of 2009 didn't end there as Shwayze and Cisco got a boost prior to the release of the first single from "Let It Beat" called "Get U Home", which got picked up for the soundtrack of the recent summer teen horror movie, Sorority Row.
Ahead of the November 3 release of "Let It beat", were Shwayze and Cisco worried about the dreaded "sophomore curse" that many artists fall victim to when releasing a second album? When we tracked down Shwayze for an exclusive one-on-one, the Shwayze namesake was more eager than concerned. "Not really." Shwayze told TheDeadbolt. "It was more excitement just to begin. We actually have a song on the record that kind of stresses that. It's a song called 'Livin' It Up', featuring Snoop Dogg. When we made our last record, people went online and liked this specific record. For those people, with this record, we have all of these flavors. We have a flavor for everybody. I think it's definitely going to be a record of the year and I'm excited to get it out."
All
about the party, shedding clothes, and rockin'
with the hotties, the sound of Shwayze continues
to evolve on "Get U Home" with laid back hip-hop
layers of a contemporary party crashing blend
of Jack Johnson meets "In Da Club" with hints of
rocking sounds of Blink 182 in a unique recipe
of beach party club music. As for the difference
in Shwayze sound between the self-titled "Shwayze"
and "Let It beat", Shwayze dished to TheDeadbolt
it's like the sun going down over Malibu beach.
"On the last record, we had the sun setting
and beautiful swaying palm trees, " Shwayze
revealed. "This one is kind of like the sun
has gone down and we're still on the beach.
But the sun has gone down and there's a sectioned
mannequin and you don't know what the hell is
going on. That's kind of like the record. The
record is like, 'All right, we did our summertime
thing and now the sun is setting and now it's
a little darker. There's a little more partying!'
